ALBERGO DEI POVERI
Corso Calatafimi 271, Palermo
IDS Academy will take place at the Real Albergo dei Poveri. This imposing building provides excellent facilities for meetings and conferences and an atmosphere that is perfect for our planned events and networking opportunities. It is close to other places of note such as Porta Nuova and the Palazzo Reale-Cappella Palatina.
The structure was commissioned by Charles of Bourbon, King of Spain and known in Sicily as Charles III of Sicily and Jerusalem, to house the poor and destitute of the city, part of a more general philanthropic programme instituted by the Bourbon kings in several major Italian cities. Its original austere baroque style has remained unaltered to this very day. Construction work began in 1744 and continued until 1834. It became a silk factory at the start of the 19th century, and continued produced silk until the 20th century.
In the 1990s, the eastern wing was bought by Regione Siciliana – Assessorato dei Beni Culturali e dell’Identità Siciliana, and is now managed as an exhibition and conference centre by the Servizio Museografico del Dipartimento dei Beni Culturali e dell’Identità Siciliana.
